Inaugural Meeting of GMSTEC in Kunming, China, hosted by Yunnan University

The inaugural meeting of the Greater Mekong Subregion Tertiary Education Consortium was hosted by Yunnan University in Kunming, China from 30 October–1 November 2001.

Representatives at this meeting reviewed the GMSTEC concept proposed by Victoria University of Wellington. Each participating university also provided a presentation on its interests in cooperation in the region and within GMSTEC. The discussions revealed a high degree of common interest and opportunities for mutual benefit through cooperation. Areas of common interest were identified for initial cooperation efforts including joint supervision of Ph.D.s and research and mutual quality assurance, articulation and twinning programmes. At the close of the meeting, representatives endorsed the concept of GMSTEC by signing the GMSTEC Establishment Agreement, thereby provided the framework for development of the GMSTEC Trust Deed.
